Just tell me what to do to feel better

I think all therapists/counsellors have heard their clients say this, “just tell me what to do”, “what will make me forget all of this”? It is understandable, since most people seek counselling or therapy to feel better or manage a difficulty in their lives.

It is true that there is no “magic phrase” or “thing” that can be done to make all your troubles go away. The truth is that life is not without struggles and troubles. We all have them, and we all have the ability to live rich full lives that include the good and the bad, the set backs and the successes. Therapy/Counselling is all about helping people to live their richest and fullest lives.

I have been studying ACT, (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) lately through an online course. I have found these concepts really resonate with me, because the theory and practice behind ACT does not include challenging the beliefs of clients, but teaching clients to live with all of their thoughts and feelings in a way that does not interfere with their lives and in accordance with their values.

The concepts behind ACT are easily accessible, you don’t have to be a therapist or counsellor to access and understand them. If you are interested in investigating this form of therapy, look for ACT videos on YouTube with Dr. Russ Harris.

If you would like to work with either John or I, as we both use ACT in our practice, please contact us. We would love to hear from you!

I hope you are all enjoying a fantastic summer!

Best

Jai
